Here's a little Mardi Gras history to show off to all of your friends!
Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday”, a centuries-old celebration predating the French. Early Christians incorporated the ancient Pagan festival into a period of celebrations prior to Lent. The modern carnival marks the overturning social conventions in the wearing of masks, costumes and bacchanalian revelry. The symbolic colors are purple, for justice, green for faith and gold for power. Today Mardi Gras is celebrated all over the world.
